Barriers to repair
Exploring social-economic, accessibility and awareness factors to engagement with product repair in a throw-away culture.

The Right to Repair Regulations, introduced into the UK in June 2021, focussed on increasing the responsibility of manufacturers to design products in a more sustainable fashion by allowing electronic products to be easily repaired. However, whilst this ensures that the product can be repaired easily by the manufacturer, it hasn’t necessarily allowed the average consumer to perform the maintenance themselves, due to a lack of knowledge, equipment, time, and—in many cases—a willingness to repair.

This project will aim to identify where the negative stigmatisms are within a repair environment, centring on an analysis of repair attitudes within different social-economic backgrounds, and to recognise ways of encouraging people from all circumstances to collaborate with a more sustainable repair culture, helping to move away from the throw-away society that we have become.

Workshop

Having access to the tools and equipment for repair is a strong starting step to engage in a project. Contact us to find out what's available.

3D Printing

3D printing is an ever popular way of creating parts that are difficult to get hold of or not available anymore. Is a component is beyond repair, 3D printing can often be the solution to create a replacement.

Reverse Engineering

Taking an existing product and digitalising it is a useful step to engage in the repair of a product.

Big and small

Repair projects come in all shapes and sizes. We specialise in repairs that could potentially be done by the user, rather than by a trained professional.

3D Scanning

Need measurements of a complex structure? Our 3D Scanning capabilities will be able to create a dimensionally accurate digital model for you.

Knowledge

The aim of this project is to research how to get everybody to engage more in the culture of repair. Going into a project, I often don't know immediately how to repair it, which gives us the perfect opportunity to learn together.
